Pakistan to host WEF on South Asia in March 2008: Shaukat Aziz

DEAD SEA, Jordan, May 18 (APP): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz Friday said Pakistan would host the World Economic Forum on South Asia in March next year, providing a chance to the region to promote its development.He was talking to reporters after his meeting with Chairman of World Economic Forum Prof. Klaus Schwab here on the sidelines of WEF on Middle East being attended by more than 1,200 participants from 56 countries.The participants, who include 16 heads of state, gathered at a new convention center on the shores of the Dead Sea in Jordan.

Prime Minister Aziz congratulated WEF Chairman Prof. Klaus Schwab and said that the forum's meeting on South Asia in Pakistan would have very positive and constructive impact on the economic and trade activities in the region, particularly in Pakistan.

He informed the WEF Chairman about the Boao Summit held recently in China and Pakistan's participation in that meeting.

The Chairman WEF, appreciating Pakistan's economic growth, said the country had been able to improve the living standard of the people as a result of the economic reforms.

The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of the WEF management and said it has been providing a platform to the economists and experts in the field of economy to share their best practices for the benefit of the developing countries.

Earlier, the Prime Minister, along with the members of his entourage, attended the WEF plenary session which was inaugurated by King Abdullah.

King Abdullah, in his inaugural address, called upon the world to "end violence, to make peace, and to build the regional economic power house of tomorrow."

He said there is great potential in the region, but it needed special attention and consideration by the world leaders and economists to consider the area for more development.

The king said the area needs water resources, improvement of environment and infrastructure for development to raise the living standard of the people.

The Prime Minister will have a very hectic day on Saturday when he will attend the summit of G-11 and address different sessions of WEF.

He will attend a meeting of political and economic leaders and address the WEF plenary session on the theme "Regional stability; who is taking the lead."

The Prime Minister is also expected to meet Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai to discuss the regional situation.
