Sri Lankan government has requested involvement in the investigation of the people who were taken from the trespassing vessel that was sunk by the coast guard, said the Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussein Shareef (Mundhoodhu) yesterday.
Mundhu said that an answer has not yet been given to this request.
"The investigation would be mainly conducted by Maldives police and armed forces" . Mundhu said that the investigations were already underway.
Even though Mundhu had earlier said that the intruding vessel was used for weapons smuggling by the Tamils, Tamils have denied these statements. The Sri Lankan government has said that the vessel was a fishing vessel that was stolen about 12 days prior to the incident.
According to the statements released by the government following the incident, the first of the five people onboard to jump from the ship does not seem to be a Tamil. It is also noted that he was the vessel's technical officer.
Hijacking Indian fishing vessels for weapons smuggling is frequently done by the Tamils. Such a vessel was seized very recently by the Sri Lankan government as well.
